Resistance & propulsion

Estimates calm-water resistance and effective power of conventional displacement monohulls in deep water with the Holtrop–Mennen and Holtrop empirical methods. A supplied open-water curve of a single fixed-pitch propeller can be matched to calculate shaft speed and delivered propeller power at specified ship speeds, with interaction factors that are supplied, estimated, or derived at model scale from a matched model resistance and self-propulsion test. Machinery-limited attainable speed and model-to-ship extrapolation are not calculated. The methods, the inputs the tool refuses and the limits of the validation are stated on the tool's About and Benchmarks & validation pages; the method's papers give no numeric range of application.

Input
Hull particulars and form parameters, entered, derived from a closed STL or OBJ hull mesh or read from a saved setup; for propulsion matching, a propeller open-water curve and interaction factors that are supplied, estimated or derived from a model test.

This tool supports learning, teaching and early design exploration using established empirical methods, documented equation checks and model-test comparisons. Further validation and matched accuracy comparisons are needed before qualification for real-world engineering use.
