Simulation tools

Free tools with a graphical interface that run on your device. Files are not uploaded, and each run records its inputs, settings and software versions so that it can be repeated.

Hydrostatics & stability

Hydrostatic tables and curves, GZ and cross curves, tanks and loading conditions, and the analysis of an inclining experiment, with the intact stability criteria of IMO Resolution MSC.267(85), Part A 2.2 and the weather criterion of 2.3, reported one by one. It reads a closed STL or OBJ hull mesh or a table of offsets, and runs in the browser, online or offline as a single file.

Hull Resistance CFD

Calm-water resistance of a hull by CFD with OpenFOAM, run on your own computer through a local graphical interface that takes an STL or OBJ hull through the mesh, the simulation and the results. It installs on Windows 10 or 11 with OpenFOAM in WSL 2, or on Ubuntu Linux.

Seakeeping

Linear motions of displacement monohulls in regular and irregular waves in deep water, by the strip theory of Salvesen, Tuck and Faltinsen with sectional coefficients from a two-dimensional panel solver. It reads a closed STL or OBJ hull mesh or a table of offsets; roll damping is entered by the user or estimated by Ikeda's method.

Illustration, not produced by the tool: polar plot of the heave response of a simplified ship model in waves against wave heading and wavelength: the response is close to one in long waves from every direction, falls to zero in short waves, and peaks in beam seas at a wavelength of about two-thirds of the ship length.

Manoeuvring

Turning circles, zig-zag manoeuvres and straight-course motion of a ship with one propeller and one rudder in calm, deep water, by the MMG standard method in surge, sway and yaw. It assesses the criteria of IMO Resolution MSC.137(76) one by one for declared trial conditions, from coefficients that are entered or estimated from published relations.

Resistance & propulsion

Calm-water resistance and effective power of conventional displacement monohulls by the empirical methods of Holtrop and Mennen and of Holtrop, without CFD. With a supplied propeller open-water curve it finds the shaft speed and delivered power at each ship speed.
