Hull Resistance CFD
Prepares, runs and analyses calm-water resistance simulations of a hull from STL or OBJ geometry with OpenFOAM v2412 (OpenCFD), through a local graphical interface. On Windows the setup installs OpenFOAM, Python and MPI in a dedicated WSL 2 environment; on Ubuntu 24.04 it installs what is missing, OpenFOAM from OpenCFD's packages and the other components from Ubuntu's archive. The package contains no OpenFOAM binary and no container image. Its validation is an archived campaign of twenty KCS and DTC runs compared with measured resistance; the numerical uncertainty of these runs has not been established under ITTC 7.5-03-01-01.
- Input
- Hull geometry as STL or OBJ; the interface prepares the run configuration.
- Runs on
- Windows 10 (build 19041 or later) or Windows 11 on a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, with OpenFOAM v2412 set up in WSL 2; or Ubuntu 24.04, where setup installs what is missing. Another Linux system works if OpenFOAM v2412 from OpenCFD, Python 3.12, Open MPI and a C++ compiler are already installed. No container is used. The author has installed and run release 1.0.0 on a clean Windows computer, and runs the tool natively on Ubuntu 22.04 with OpenFOAM v2412 and Python 3.12 that he installed separately; no qualification run is recorded.

This tool supports learning, teaching and early design exploration of calm-water resistance by CFD, compared with model-test measurements for the KCS and DTC hulls. The numerical uncertainty of a run is not established; check the mesh, time step and convergence of each case, and qualify the tool further before real-world engineering use.
This offering is not approved or endorsed by OpenCFD Limited, producer and distributor of the OpenFOAM software via www.openfoam.com, and owner of the OPENFOAM® and OpenCFD® trade marks.
